Driver held after hitting down student on East Coast

A driver is in police custody after he stuck down a Hinterland Scholarship student as she attempted to cross the Rupert Craig Highway yesterday afternoon, in the vicinity of the Ocean View Hotel.

Lauren Williams, 12, who resides at the Liliendaal Amerindian Hostel, was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit, after she allegedly ran into the path of an oncoming vehicle on the Rupert Craig Highway, East Coast Demerara.

Investigators stated that from the reports they received, the girl was among a group of eight students, all of whom ran across the road, after they exited a bus sometime after 3 pm. Williams being the last to cross, ran into the path of the vehicle which was heading east along the northern carriageway.

A badly bruised Williams was unable to speak when she arrived at the health facility. She was surrounded by the hostel staff and colleagues while awaiting treatment. The police eventually took a statement from the girl and the driver who struck her down. The driver is in police custody assisting with investigation.
