Pregnant 12-year-old in child protection agency’s care

A pregnant 12-year-old girl, who claimed that she was impregnated by her stepfather, was yesterday released from a city hospital and is now in the care of the Child Care & Protection Agency (CC&PA).

The preteen was admitted to the hospital after being air-dashed from an interior hospital last Saturday. She had reportedly been suffering from abdominal pains and had been under observation until yesterday, when she was released in the early afternoon.

The girl is almost full-term.

When contacted, CC&PA Director Ann Greene stated that she was aware of the situation and deemed it “an abomination.”

“No child twelve years old should be pregnant,” Greene emphasised before adding, “It’s an abomination. We have to stop this from happening.”

Greene further explained that she became aware of the young girl’s case after she was informed by hospital officials of the girl’s condition following her admission. She added that girls in their teens are referred from interior hospitals to city ones due to any complications that may arise. This, Greene said, is standard procedure for such cases.

“She’s in our care and we’re looking after her interest,” Greene said. According to Greene, the police are investigating the girl’s allegations against her stepfather.

Several attempts to contact Crime Chief Leslie James to confirm whether the man was still in custody proved futile.

Greene further said that investigations are underway to determine additional information such as whose care the girl had been in when she became pregnant.
