Trio get bail over $3.8M Rupununi burglary

Three men yesterday found themselves charged with the theft of almost $4M in items from a contractor at Central Rupununi.

Delvar Bunbury, 34, of Yarrowkabra Creek, Linden-Soesdyke Highway, Rondel Fitzpatrick, 23, an electrical worker of Marshal, Linden and Vishal Singh, 33, of Kwatata Village all pleaded not guilty to the charge read to them by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

It is alleged that between September 13, 2014 and October 11, 2014, at Central Rupununi, they broke and entered the house of Raiaz Akbar and stole a quantity of electrical items, valued $1,830,000 and a quantity of other items valued $1,993,000, all belonging to Akbar. In total, items valuing $3,823,000 were stolen.

According to Prosecutor Michael Grant, Akbar, a contractor, secured his home before leaving to travel. Upon returning, he noticed the hasp and staple of the door was broken and he then entered the house and discovered articles missing. The matter was reported and acting on information received the police contacted the three men. Some of the articles were discovered. They were later arrested and charged.

The prosecutor had no objections to bail being granted but asked for it to be substantial because of the value of the items stolen.

Bail was later set at $250,000 for each man and the matter was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for December 1.
