Prison officer on murder charge after fatal Soesdyke beating

A prison officer was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with the fatal assault of another man.

It is alleged that Sherwin Stewart murdered Anthony Narine.

Stewart was not required to enter a plea when Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry read the charge at the George-town Magistrates’ Court One yesterday. The matter will be called again on December 22.

According to eyewitnesses, Stewart assaulted Narine, a taxi driver, last Thursday at the Soesdyke/Linden Highway junction after becoming enraged at being taunted by a group of men about his wife.

The man’s wife, Amrita Narine said her husband was fine after the altercation but complained of feeling unwell the next morning and he was subsequently rushed to Woodlands Hospital, where he was hospitalised until his death on Tuesday.
