Port Kaituma man jailed over hotel break in

A Port Kaituma resident was sentenced to 12 months in jail and also remanded after he was arraigned in a Georgetown court on two separate break and enter charges yesterday.

Junior Roberts, 20, of Port Kaituma North West District, pleaded guilty to a charge which stated that on November 11, at Water Front, Port Kaituma, he broke and entered a room at the Sheik Hotel and stole a quantity of items and cash amounting to a total of $150,000.

The prosecution’s case is that on the date mentioned in the charge, at about 4:25am, Roberts broke and entered the hotel room and stole items. However, surveillance cameras on the building captured the theft.

Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Robertson was previously charged with a similar offence and is currently before the court on a pending matter. Jones added that Roberts had refused to attend court and an arrest warrant had to be issued for him.

It was also alleged that between November 24 and 25, at Port Kaituma, Roberts broke into the dwelling house of Elroy Allan and stole a quantity of items carrying a total value of $95,000.

Roberts pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate Ann McLennan, who presided over the matter then sentenced Roberts to twelve months imprisonment for the offence for which he pleaded guilty and he was remanded to prison on the other charge. The case will be called again on February 2, 2015, at the magistrate’s court in Matthews Ridge.
