Couple injured in Croal St crash

A biker and his reputed wife are now hospitalized with broken bones after an alleged speeding bus slammed into their motorcycle on Croal Street yesterday morning.

Injured is biker Clinton Gobin, 50, and his reputed wife and pillion rider Roxanne Adams, 41, both of 85 William Street, Kitty.

The couple are now patients at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where Gobin is nursing a fractured leg, broken ribs and two broken toes. While Adams is suffering from a broken shoulder and foot, as well as multiple lacerations about her body.

According to Gobin, he prepared to turn right onto Croal Street from Oronoque Street, after stopping at the intersection to allow a vehicle to pass. He said he then proceeded to turn onto Croal Street, since the white car proceeding west along Croal Street, was some distance away.

However, “I just feel the impact and I end up in the gutter and she [Adams] end up underneath the bus” Gobin added.

He opined that the bus must have overtaken the car and caused the accident. “I don’t know how he reach up under me so fast”, the injured man further said.

Moreover, Gobin said that the next thing he knew was that he and his motorcycle with licence plate number CH 3400, ended up in a nearby alleyway, while Adams was trapped underneath the Route 47 bus with licence plate number BSS 8098. Adams, was immediately rushed to the GPH, while Gobin, who was bleeding from the bruises on his arms and legs stayed on the scene to ensure his bike was removed from the alleyway, before he was transported to the GPH by a taxi driver.

One eyewitness who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said that he saw the bus drive into the bike at a fast rate at about 8:35am.

He added that the bike was pushed by the bus for a short distance before it stopped.

“If you see how the lady get bruise up, all she back and hands white! white! white!” shouted one woman who said she also witnessed the accident. That woman added that the bus was at fault with the speed he was proceeding with.

For his part, the bus driver Paul (only name given) said that he was driving west along Croal Street, when “the fellow (Gobin) just ride out from Oronoque Street without stopping. Paul said that he applied brakes, but “I end up hitting he from my right side”, he added.

Adams’ daughter told this newspaper yesterday afternoon that her mother has to undergo emergency surgery for her broken limbs. “she look bad”, the overwhelmed teenager added.Many who congregated at the scene expressed disgust at the late response of the police.

The driver of the bus is in police custody, assisting with investigations.
