Young people should say no to suicide

Dear Editor,

It’s a new year and we all made promises and plans to make our new year prosperous, but it was sad to learn that some persons didn’t have a year which started well. Their joys and happiness were cut short by loved ones or friends who committed suicide or who tried to take their own lives.

It is also very sad to discover that the majority of perpetrators were teenagers and young adults.  And the rate of suicide is relatively high, especially in Region 6. We all know that suicide is not the solution to any problem, no matter what it may be. Whether it is family problems, relationship problems, financial problems, peer pressure, one must not think that suicide is the way out. Teenagers and young adults should not take matters into their own hands; they should talk to someone, let their feelings out and not resort to committing suicide putting their loved ones in distress and causing them hurt. They should look at all the good and wonderful times they had in  life, and look back at the times they were happy and had the courage to move on and live every day towards their goal. We all need to be strong and supportive of each other, and those thinking of suicide should call up a friend, talk to their parents or even their school teacher, and let them advise and guide them so they could be who they want to be and create a bright future for themselves. As for the public, let us join together in raising awareness about suicide. Let us help those in need, especially teenagers and young adults; educate them, let them know the consequences of suicide and help them to build their confidence and boost their thinking about how life works. We all can do this; all we need is co-operation and teamwork. Teenagers and young adults out there, should not let suicide be an option. They should be positive, think positively and be who they want to be.

Say no to suicide and yes to life!

Yours faithfully,

S SomwarI
