Is Bartica the capital of garbage?

Dear Editor,

Dr Cheddi Jagan some time in the late ’50s started a road from Parika to Makouria. The contact was awarded to the Del Conte Company from Venezuela. The road was surveyed, lines were cut and construction was in progress, and suddenly this project came to a halt until today.

Then after Dr Jagan came Mr Forbes Burnham, who built the Soesdyke-Linden highway and the Demerara Harbour Bridge. This road and bridge still serve the Guyanese public. Then came Mr Desmond Hoyte who made Guyanese life much easier by lifting the ban on essential food items, etc. After that it was Mr Bharrat Jagdeo who built the Berbice River Bridge.

We are now calling on our present President Donald Ramotar to fulfil Dr Jagan’s dreams, and finish what he started, ie, continue the Parika-Makouria road. The old trail is still there to build a laterite road. In addition rebuild the Makouria Stelling and have a ferry Service from Makouria to Bartica. Far more commuters will use this shorter journey to the interior. Mining, quarrying and timber will benefit from this new venture.

Now let me mention Bartica, which is a wonderful place where tourism could flourish, were it not for the reckless dumping of garbage on the Byderabo road and around Bartica. It may seem that no one can control this situation. Is Bartica the capital of garbage in Guyana? I do hope the authorities take this matter seriously, because a serious epidemic could break out in Bartica and many people could get sick, especially children.

Yours faithfully,
Winston Miller
