Large building under way on Chateau Margot reserve will impede the flow of water

Dear Editor,

There is currently at Chateau Margot on the East Coast of Demerara, along its eastern reserve, a large two storey concrete building that is in its early stages of construction.  It has been rumoured anecdotally that permission was given to the owner to construct that huge illegal building by a current as well as a former member of the Neighbourhood Democratic Council of LBI/ Better Hope.  Many bona fide residents were told or bullied to keep their mouths shut when they objected to this huge structure which will impede and block the free flow of waste and rainwater from their properties.

As a result of that illegal and underhand business of building a large concrete structure on reserve land the rain and waste would not flow freely into the canal which carries it to the Success pumping station, but would remain on ratepayers’ land and cause unnecessary flooding, and even worse, severe structural damage to their properties.

We understand that several complaints were made recently to the NDC of LBI/Better Hope, and also to the Housing Ministry, and complaints were politely treated, but no condign action was taken. Even the incumbent Chairman of the NDC was informed that this illegal structure would cause much distress to other residents when it rains, as there would be no outlet for the rain and  waste water.

Through this letter we respectfully request that the Minister of Housing and the current Chairman of the NDC of LBI/Better Hope take note and investigate this illegal construction on reserve land.

Stabroek News and other media houses should send a photographer to get a photo of this illegal structure and publish it, as there are several other illegal structures that have been built with the permission of someone formerly in the NDC of LBI/Better Hope.

Yours faithfully,
