Electrocuted v shocked

Dear Editor,

We live in a dynamic world where change is inevitable. With language, particularly English, new words are added over time but the meanings of old words do not change dramatically. For example if someone is ‘electrocuted’ I understand he is as dead as a doornail. On the other hand, if he is ‘shocked’ I realise he got careless, came into contact with an exposed wire powered with, maybe 110 volts, and felt the impact in his body.

Sadly Editor, some media outlets are using these two words interchangeably. Are we being too dynamic here?

Yours faithfully,
L Dunsford Dickson
