1903 cartridge casing

Dear Editor,

I am almost sure that your readership would have welcomed your ‘Centenary Supplement’ of ‘The First World War 1914-1918’ dated Sunday, Jun 29, 2014.

I would now like to share with you and your readership a historic piece and perhaps this was used during the same world war. It’s a German made 1903 cartridge casing, manufactured in Karlsruhe.

I would be delighted to be educated to know whether this piece could have been retrieved from that war.

Yours faithfully,

T Pemberton

Editor’s note

It will be impossible to know whether it was brought here from any of the First World War theatres, or came from a military weapon not used in the war, or was not intended for a military weapon at all. You have not supplied all the markings on the casing which might establish its calibre, for example, and the pictures you have provided are no help. Since it is stamped Karlsruhe, it would have been manufactured by the Deutsche Metallpatronenfabrik Lorenz there. Why not use Google to research further?
