I wish to commend the “meddling” outgoing US Ambassador Mr Brent Hardt for his commentary, insightful analysis and advocacy on behalf of the Guyanese people for the government to stop making excuses and set a date for urgently needed local government elections.
At the Blue CAPS’ closing ceremony for our Building Communities through Leadership Training and Service (BCLTS) programme, the Ambassador was spot on and lucidly outlined the illogical and inconsistent comments made by various government officials as it relates to holding local government elections.
It is startling and disappointing that the governing administration would single out our NGO for unfounded criticism, including that our actions have amounted to exhibiting a hidden political agenda. If calling for the hosting of local government elections constitutes political motives then so be it. In the short space of time since our establishment, we have had to wear many different cloaks and labels from all ends of the current political spectrum.
It is my hope that the Ambassador’s “meddling” achieves the goal of energizing others into agitation for local government elections, and it moves them into action that demands that the political status quo of today need not constitute the new normal of tomorrow.
