No GWI bill for this year

Dear Editor,

Guyana Water Inc has by way of a press release informed its consumers about the disconnection of water services for outstanding payments for the period up to June 2014. This is all well and good, but did GWI issue any water bills for the said period? I can recall that GWI personnel did come and read my meter but I have not received any bill for this year, 2014. As a result I do not know how much money I owe GWI. Please don’t tell me that I should call the Customer Service office to find out. I don’t have to do this in the case of GPL or GT&T, so why do I have to do it with GWI?

Having a bill makes it much easier to settle one’s account. If I have a bill I can ask someone to pay it at any of GWI’s offices, or at a money transfer facility. This process will be less time consuming. On the other hand, if I don’t have a bill I will have to ask that person to find out how much is owed in the case of GWI, or they will have to fill up the requisite forms in the case of a money transfer facility. This process will definitely be time consuming. My suggestion to GWI is if they cannot get the bills to the consumer, when the disconnection crew visits the consumer let them inform the consumer of their outstanding balance and that they are been given seven working days to settle this or be disconnected. This strategy would ensure that each and every consumer who is on the disconnection list was duly informed of their outstanding balance so that they could settle their account in order to avoid disconnection. Water is life, don’t waste it. Time is money, save it.

Yours faithfully,
Colin Gill
