‘Mischief thou art afoot’

Dear Editor,

William Shakespeare gave us the Ides of March in Julius Caesar; here in Guyana, David Granger trumped him with his own fateful promised Ides of September. Is he soothsayer or conspirator? Or rabble-rouser extraordinaire à la Mark Antony?

For starters, I do not believe that the Brigadier has the required cadre of lean and hungry men. They are too fat and filled; they seek more of the same, but for themselves only. Hungry men are angry men; these fellows have had it too good. They might be dangerous to the citizens of this country, otherwise, they are too friendly to the powers to be threatening.

Still, one must wonder if the local Calpurnia(s) have had any troubling dreams of late. While all this unfolds, Guyanese will learn if this is the tide which when taken at the flood will lead to fortune. Or further grave misfortune, as they have previously experienced. Yes, there have been so many unkind cuts, what is one more… I say stop lending your ears to any of these characters; stop believing them; and if there are tears left, prepare to shed them.

In this country, like Mark Antony I do see that mischief thou art afoot. Now take what course thou wilt.

Yours faithfully,

GHK Lall
