Radio should revert to the types of music they used to play

Dear Editor,

The chaotic situation that has befallen our young people today, particularly those in school, must be blamed on the types of music that pervade our society. Just listen to the words of many of the songs that are played on the television and especially on the radio and you would be sick to your stomach over what our young children are lending their ears to.

There is one radio station in Berbice that just started up the other day, and they started off well, but just listen to the nasty, vulgar music they play these days. Every day at 12 pm the host plays this most abhorrent song, ‘Tight up Skirt’ over and over. Then there’s ‘The only man she want,’ and ‘Wine pon meh.’ Our young children’s minds become corrupt and clouded with these kinds of music and their lyrics.

The dancehall type of music can be heard on other stations as well. Then there are these alcohol- laced events like car and bike shows and such like, which our young people are drawn to, especially our young girls—schoolgirls!

The recent sex tapes that have been confiscated by the police and Ministry of Education are proof enough of what our society is becoming—the horror within our school system, the burdens that teachers have to shoulder every single day dealing with these matters and being held wrongfully accountable.

The incident at that city school is just one of many that is taking place around our country. The youths are getting beside themselves, hormones are raging. The influx of these energy drinks on our market is just absurd. What is going on?

Why can’t our Ministry of Health ban these items from the local scene? Are our young people aware of the adverse health effects of these ‘poisons’ in attractive cans and bottles?

Shall I now discuss school sports? These events, usually held during this time of the school year, have become more about what girls and boys are wearing and less about the 100-metre sprint and relays.

The lack of morals and disreputable behaviour are expressed through the lewd music that is being played at these events. Why can’t school sports be held on the school ground in a more toned-down way, without any music, or even better yet, with other kinds of music? Is it because we, the teachers, too hold fast to some of these degenerative values and music?

I am ashamed and embarrassed at the vulgarity and fights that happen at these events, and the Ministry of Education is standing idly by. I am suggesting some stringent guidelines for the hosting of school sports, pronto! Strangers infiltrate these events. Boyfriends come and start fights with other boyfriends; jealousy and rage are dealt with at these events of all events.

Students should be attired in their uniform at these events and the music needs to stop.

Radio stations especially Little Rock radio in Berbice ought to revert to the music they used to play when they just started up in Berbice. I expect better from the Christies.

Yours faithfully,
Leon Suseran
