Is the city council dumping garbage?

Dear Editor,

On the morning of Wednesday, November 5, 2014, I witnessed a most bizarre incident, even by our ludicrous standards here in Guyana.

Three members of a clean-up crew who presumably were employees of the Mayor & City Council of Georgetown were dumping bins of garbage on the side of the street. This occurred at the corner of Schumaker and Water Streets (behind the abandoned co-operative bank). This corner and the entire block always has mountains of garbage and the stench of faeces and urine is nauseating.

Right on cue as expected in this phantasmagoric realm we call Guyana, all this takes place outside the Ministry of Human Services & Social Security. ‘Because we care!’ is the new mantra.

20141108city workers 120141108city workers 2After being confronted by drivers and other passers-by the employees let loose a series of expletives.

I was under the notion, now seemingly misguided, that the new Town Clerk and the national government were on a mission to clean up the city, as opposed to moving garbage from plain sight and dumping it on side streets.

I applaud the men who confronted these people and brought it to my attention in the first place. Their phone cameras caused instant panic. Knowing fully well they were in the wrong, they initially covered their faces as they realised they were being photographed.

It gave me a boost to see there are people still here actively fighting to drag this runaway train to nowhere country out from the abyss and save us from further bedlam.

Yours faithfully,
Mark Jacobs
