Citizens should support the protest over Hickens’ rape comments

Dear Editor,

My eyes became teary as I read of the continued protests over the Police Commander’s rape comments in the SN November 22 edition. First off, I wish to congratulate every woman and man who stood there as a means to protect, defend and support our women and children from rapists. They have made Guyana proud in not condoning these disrespectful and degrading comments, emanating from such a high officer of our land.

To Red Thread, SASOD and every person representing a group, I say thank you on behalf of the men, women and children of Guyana.

However, it must be noted that some sections of the media continue to ignore the seriousness of these comments on rape which continue to affect so many women and     children who have experienced the silent killing of their psychological being. We already lack the resources to effectively treat these traumatic conditions, so why must we sit back and listen to a senior official tell us we are the ones causing rape.

People should wake up. We need to put a stop the rape culture in this country. We must not sit back and watch our children being raped then justify it. How can Mr Hickens suggest that one’s dress can be used as a preventative measure against rape?

I urge the citizens of this country who seek a better place for their children to stand up against this lawlessness and support the protests being held at the Brickdam Police Station. They should stop turning a blind eye to mostly children and women who are being raped; they should stop ignoring the consequences of rape and really strategically attack this social plight from the standpoint of educated persons capable of doing so. They should not accept Mr Hickens’ flimsy excuses with regard to handling rape in Guyana. The issue affects men too, since their wives and children could be potential victims.

Yours faithfully,
Sarah Balgobin
