Latchmansingh, Rosignol schools top zones

Latchmansingh and Rosignol Primary Schools topped their respective zones in the latest action of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Festival. There were also victories for Leonora, Cornelia Ida (CI), and Meten-Meer-Zorg schools in the West Coast Demerara zone while St. Paul’s, Beterverwagting and Plaisance Primary Schools dominated the Lower East Coast District.

In matches played on Tuesday in the Lower West Coast Berbice Zone at Bush Lot Ground Latchmansingh,

the eventual winner defeated Novar Primary to set up the final against game two winners Calcutta.

In the final Latchmansingh scored 176-7 then restricted their opponents to 128-9 to win by 46 runs.

Jashan Saul 33 and Timothy Harrichand, 16 were the top scorers for Latchmansingh.

Bowling for Calcutta Kenroy Ali, Britney Lyte and Trevon Prince took two wickets each. In reply Calcutta reached 128-9 when the overs expired.

Timothy Harrichand and Jashan Saul took 4-7 and 3-11 respectively.

At the Blairmont Ground in games played yesterday in the Upper West Coast Berbice (UWCB) zone, Rosignol won the final to top their zone.

The first game between Bath and Number 5 Primary School was a low scoring match.

Bath took first strike and could only manage 96-9 from their 10 overs with Jamal Fraser taking 3-3. In reply Number 5, who was assisted by 16 extras managed to make 112-6.

Bowling for Bath, Richard Sauers took a hat-trick finishing with figures of 3-12.

In the second game Rosignol Primary got past Blairmont by 23 runs. Rosignol scored 118-9 in their 10 overs with Marvan Prashad and Abdoor Singh, the joint top scorers with 15. Bowling for Blairmont, Shahid Hussain took 3-17.

In their turn at the crease Blairmont were bowled out for 95. Rosignol’s Alvin Chowramootoo (4-9), Leon Chamalall (3-20) and Okifi Patoir were the chief wicket takers.

Chowramootoo took hat trick with his first three deliveries.

The penultimate game involved Number 5 and Ithaca.

Number 5 won the toss and fielded, restricting Ithaca to 106-5 with extras contributing 20. Eldrin Headley took 2-7 for Number 5 who in reply made 122-4.

Mathew Maynard was the only bowler on target for Ithaca.

The UWCB zone concluded with Rosignol Primary defeating Number 5 Primary by 55 runs.

Rosignol’s innings of 149-4 was set up by skipper Marvan Prashad (14) who received support from Evon Smith (10).

Number 5 had a poor start losing two wickets without any run being scored. Abdool Singh (2-8) and Tejpaul Khedou (3-6) took five of the six wickets to fall for Number 5 who finished their innings on 84-6.

There were three matches in the Lower East Coast Demerara Zone at Better Hope Community Centre ground.

St. Paul (161-9 in 10 overs) defeated Montrose (134-9 in 10 overs) by 27 runs in game one.

In game two Beterverwagting Primary (197-6 in 10 overs) defeated Vryheid’s Lust Primary (127 all out in 10 overs) by 70 runs. O. Glasgow and S. Thompson were the principal scorers for Beterverwagting with 18 and 16 runs respectively.

The day’s final game saw Plaisance Primary (131 all out in 10 overs) holding the upper hand against Chateau Margot Primary (101 all out in 10 overs) by 30 runs.

The tournament continues tomorrow with games at Imam Bacchus, Albion and All Saints Presbyterian grounds from 9:30 a.m., while matches at Wales, Thirst Park, and Uitvlugt commence at 1300hrs.
