Top local boxers record wins on opening night

The three-night, four nation Goodwill Boxing Tournament got off to a scorcher Friday evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and the locals did not disappoint as they delivered a knockout night of boxing.

Junior Henry (52kg), Imran ‘Magic’ Khan (60kg), Clairmont Gibson (60kg), Bert Braithwaite (64kg), Eon Bancroft (69kg) and Dennis Thomas (75kg) all recorded victories on the opening night of the fistic competition.

Ron Smith (69kg) was the only local boxer that had a blemish on his record. He lost to Trinidadian, Akeil Outram via unanimous decision.

Henry outpointed Trinidad and Tobago’s Akmal Stroude, Khan knocked out Jamaican, Patrick Sahadeo in the final round, Gibson won via disqualification versus Trinidadian, Michael Alexander.

Braithwaite, Bancroft and Thomas pounded out points wins against Trinidad’s Jean Paul Cooper and St. Lucia’s Ron Bastien and Arthur Langelier respectively.

Before the international bouts, they were five local fights.

Thirteen bouts were carded for Friday night.

The tournament which continued last night, concludes tonight. Bell time is 18:00hrs.

Notes: The new computerized scoring system controlled by AIBA certified referee/judge, James Beckles is being utilized in the tournament. This competition marks the first time in Guyana that amateur fighters fought without headgear.  (Emmerson Campbell)
