Edghill takes first step on road to Youth Olympics

Continental Group of Companies continued their sponsorship of ace table tennis player, Chelsea Edghill yesterday.

During a simple but significant ceremony at the company’s Ruimveldt headquarters, Corporate Secretary, Percival Boyce, handed over a cheque to Edghill which will be used to offset her meal, airfare and accommodation expenses for the Silverbowl Open which serves off in Trinidad and Tobago this weekend.

and women’s champion of the tournament and will look to successfully defend her titles.

More significantly however, yesterday’s gesture was the first step to putting Edghill on the road to the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China since she will be using a series of tournaments to hit top form at the Games. President of the GTTA, Godfrey Munroe who thanked Boyce for Edghill’s sponsorship and stated that “this is just one of the tournaments geared towards her preparation for the second Youth Olympic Games to be held Nanjing, China from August 17 to 28.”

Munroe then outlined Edghill’s preparatory path to Nanjing. “There is the Latin American Youth Olympic Games Qualifier in the Dominican Republic from March 28th-30th, then the Canadian Open in Markham, Canada from April 9th-13th followed by the Caribbean Junior Championships in Cuba from the 16th to the 21st of April.”

After her CSEC exams in May, the racquet wielding star will head to the Youth Olympic Games qualifying camp in Chengdu, China from June 3 to the 27. The 16-year old Bishops’ High School standout will also play in the China Junior and Cadet Open while in Chengdu.

She will then return to play the Senior Caribbean Championships from June 30 to July 5 in Cuba.

Munroe continued “That will be followed by the ITTF camp in Austria or the USA from the 7th to the 20th of July then the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd to August 3rd.

“From August 4th to 16th, the ITTF will be hosting a training camp in Nanjing then the Games will begin.”

Edghill has a packed and costly schedule ahead but Boyce stated that his company is willing to assist and will have a sit down with his fellow executives and the GTTA when the junior table tennis star returns from the Twin Island Republic.
