Weekend cricket roundup…

By Delvon Mc Ewan

It was a batsmen friendly weekend in the Georgetown Cricket Association second week of competition for the 2014 season as five centuries and seven half centuries were recorded at the various levels of competition at various venue around Georgetown, last weekend.

Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) batsmen were responsible for four of the five centuries recorded and three of the seven half centuries as the club ended a successful weekend of cricket in the city.

Hadi’s World Incorporated  first division:

At GCC Ground, Bourda, DCC won first innings against their archrivals GCC in a game where Christopher Barnwell returned to form with a top score of 150 for his side. After being sent in by GCC, DCC scored 393-5 in 87 overs before declaring. Fifteen-year-old national youth player Sherfane Rutherford (111) and Christopher Barnwell led the way on a pitch that was good for batting.

Rutherford, who opened the batting with the attacking Andrew Lyght Jr., started slowly as Lyght Jr. got down to business early.

DCC lost its first wicket when Lyght Jr. was removed by Joshua Wade with the score on 57. By that time Rutherford had already played himself him hitting four boundaries in one Chidanand Shivram over.

He began to bat with maturity hitting the ball to all parts of the ground as he cruised to his maiden first division century. He was severe on national player Robin Bacchus finding the boundary anytime the bowler was too short or too full.

Barnwell, who is no stranger to success at this level, but has been struggling at the first-class level batted with confidence to register yet another first-division century. Bowling for GCC, Wade took two wickets to finish as the leading bowler for his side.

GCC ended the first day on 33 without loss, with Bacchus on 12 and season first division player Wasim Haslim on 7.

National four-day captain, Leon Johnson, joined Bacchus and the two batsmen put on 22 runs for the second wicket before Bacchus was bowled by Parks for 43. Six of the GCC batsmen got to 20 without any of them applying themselves for a big score. National pacer Paul Wintz took 5 wickets with only Martin Pestano Belle (33) and Johnson (27) supporting Bacchus’s effort.

Antonel Atwell, who picked up two wickets, also bowled well for DCC who scored 204-3 in their second turn at the crease. Rutherford continued his excellent display of batting, ending on an unbeaten 79 while Lyght Jr. 64 and Barnwell who was also unbeaten at the end on 38 supported well.
