Digicel Squash Championships…Wiltshire defeats Arjoon to secure semi-final berth

National under-17 champion Larissa Wiltshire upset Victoria Arjoon 3-1 in their quarterfinal matchup when the Guyana Squash Association (GSA) Digicel sponsored National Senior Championships continued on Friday at the Georgetown Club squash courts.

Wiltshire took the opening set as she overcame the number three seed 11-9. It became 2-0 as Wiltshire clinched the second set by an identical score. Arjoon rebounded in the third round, narrowing the deficit to one as she won 11-8.

However, Wilshire clinched her berth in the semi-final round, claiming the fourth set 11-4.

Continuing in the same division, Ashley De Groot defeated Taylor Fernandes in straight sets 11-8, 11-9 and 11-7.

In the final matchup of the division, Akeila Wiltshire crushed Kathy Ten-Pow 11-9, 11-2 and 11-6.

In the Men’s Open division, 2014 national under-19 champion and three-time Caribbean champion Nyron Joseph overcame former national champion Reagan Pollard 3-1.

Joseph raced into an early lead, taking the opening round 11-8. Pollard then levelled the score, clinching the second set 11-7. Joseph reclaimed the lead, easily winning the third round by an 11-1 margin and then the fourth set 11-4.

In the other matchups of the section, Alex Arjoon defeated Deje Dias in straight sets 11-2, 11-2 and 11-4 while Richard Chin crushed Nicholas Narain 11-8, 11-0 and 11-5 and Jason Ray Khalil defeated Ben Mekdeci 11-9, 11-3 and 11-0.

Joe Mekdeci defeated Timothy Jonas 11-6, 11-4 and 11-3, while Alwyn Callender crushed Damon Woodroffe 11-5, 11-8 and 11-5 in their Men’s Veterans 35-49 divisional matchup.

The final two matches of the section saw Medhi Ramdhani defeating Philip Fernandes 11-4, 11-5 and 11-4 and Brian Yong overcoming Stephen Fernandes 11-3, 11-9, 7-11 and 11-7.

In the Women’s Open Plate section, Andrea King overcame Rebecca Low in a marathon five-set match up 11-9, 15-17, 11-8, 11-13 and 11-5. The final matchup of the division saw Tiffany Solomon defeating Sarah Lewis 11-5, 11-7 and 11-3.

In the Men’s Open Plate division, Joshua Abdool defeated Antonio Joseph 11-2, 11-2 and 11-5, while Robert Hiscock defeated Jamaal Douglas 11-6, 11-4, 9-11 and 11-5. The final two matches of the section witnessed Oliver Kear-Downes defeating Haopei Yang 11-2, 11-2 and 11-5 and Alec Melville beating Ian Mekdeci 11-6, 11-8 and 11-2.
