CBC championships…Women basketballers crushed by T&T

Team Guyana suffered another crushing group-B loss, going down to Trinidad and Tobago 96-33 when the women’s section of the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) championships continued yesterday in Tortola, British Virgin Islands (BVI).

Natasha Alder was the only scorer in double figures for Guyana as she netted 13 points. Rhea Codio led the winners with 15 points while Rhonda John, Joelisa Cooper and Anika Nothingham scored 13, 13 and 10 points respectively.

Leading Team Guyana 17-10 following the end of the first period, Trinidad and Tobago would extend their lead as they outscored Guyana 18-9 in the second interval to go into half time leading 35-19.

The twin-island republic would then extend their advantage in the third stanza, outscoring Guyana 26-5 as the third quarter ended with the scores on 61-23.

Guyana would endure another miserable offensive showing in the final stanza as they netted a paltry nine points while conceding a whopping 35 points to round out the loss.

In their opening group-B fixture on Tuesday, Team Guyana went down to Jamaica by an 86-26 score line. Shakeila Sampson and Latoya Rodney led the local side with six points apiece while Natasha Adler, Tamara Hunter and Kean Andrews netted four points respectively in the loss.

Shenneika Smith led the Jamaicans with figures of 16 points, seven rebounds and as many assists. She was supported by Jennifer George who registered a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds and Loreta Gordon who netted an even 12 points off the bench.

Trailing by 12 points following a 19-7 opening period, Guyana would fall further behind as Jamaica netted 29 points in the period to go into the half leading 48-12. The lopsided encounter would continue in the third interval as Jamaica outscored Guyana 22-8 to go into the final period leading 70-20.

With the result of the match-up already decided, Jamaica would outscore Guyana by a 16-6 margin in the final stanza to seal the comprehensive win. Guyana will now face off with St. Vincent and the Grenadines today in their final group-B match-up.
