Guyana makes strong reply after dismissing Windwards cheaply

A tidy bowling display from Guyana’s spin bowlers saw the Windward Islands being dismissed for a paltry first innings total on a rain affected first day of the second round match of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional Under-19 tournament yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Carifesta Avenue.

Inspired by eight wickets from its spinners, Guyana restricted the Windwards for 139 all out in 62.4 overs before finishing the day’s play at 44 without loss from 10 overs.

All-rounder Balchand Baldeo with 4-29 from 19 overs of off spin was the best Guyanese bowler.

Baldeo’s effort was aided by quality bowling from off spinner Sharaz Ramcharan who claimed two

wickets while spinners Damion Waldron and Steven Sankar collected a wicket each.

The Windwards never recovered from being 32-3 at one stage and only

Ryan John (24) who batted at number seven and Arson Latchman (22) were the batsmen passed 20 against the disciplined Guyanese bowling attack.

Replying to the visitors’ score, the hosts reached the close without losing a wicket as its two West Indies U-19 batsmen Tagenarine Chanderpaul (17) and Shimron Hetmyer (26) remained unbeaten. The pair batted confidently to the close and have already struck six boundaries between them.

The Windwards won their first round match against Trinidad and Tobago but face a tall order in defending their meagre total against Guyana who drew its first match against the Leeward Islands.

The game which started at 12:50 p.m. due to a wet outfield closed at 5:41 p.m., 19 minutes before the scheduled time because of bad light.
