GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC – Guyanese club Alpha United is not fazed by their opening round loss in the CONCACAF Champions League and says they intend to step up their attacking prowess in the remaining games.

Alpha United went down 1-0 to Honduran outfit Deportiva Olumpia last Tuesday at the National Stadium at Providence, on the first Match Day of the prestigious regional tournament.

However, head coach Wayne Dover said there would be no retreat from his side, and would be looking to get among the goals in upcoming matches.

“We went back to the drawing board and based on our assessment, we have spent a lot of time on the field working on being more effective in the attacking third,” he explained.

“It is the view that we need to be more effective in our offensive pattern which would result in better finishing.”

Alpha were sunk by an Alberth Elís Martínez 17th minute goal and then failed to find a way back into the contest despite creating several chances before their home crowd.

He said they had reviewed the contest and knew where they had gone wrong and where improvement was needed.

“The goal that decided the game resulted from a deflection in the area, but I do believe that we represented well,” Dover said. “We created chances, but did not convert them.”

In their second outing, Alpha meet Major League Soccer side Portland Timbers next Tuesday, also at the National Stadium here.

Alpha are doing battle in Group Five of the competition.
