Atwell throws down the gauntlet to Mullings

WBC CABOFE light welterweight champion, Clive ‘The Punisher’ Atwell was ringside Saturday night for Jamaica’s Sakima Mullings’ round two, TKO victory over Derrick ‘Lights Out’ Richmond.

Was he scouting Mullings who could be his next opponent?

Maybe.

The 25 year-old fighting pride of Guyana is relishing the idea of matching gloves with Mullings (17(12)-1-0) for the WBC CABOFE strap in a fight that could happen as early as October 25 in the Land of Wood and Water.

“I sent an email to his management outlining my demands,” Atwell told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

“I was told that my demands are going to be met. Its just a matter of time to see whether the verbal statements are official,” Atwell added.

Atwell (12-1-1, 7 KOs) disclosed that in order to be on a level playing field in Jamaica, he has requested a foreign referee and judges to officiate the highly anticipated event.

“One of the demands I made was that none of the officials, judges or the referee for the particular bout must not be from Jamaica. I felt I was robbed in Mexico (when he fought Jhonny Gonzalez in May for the WBC world featherweight title) and I don’t want a repeat.”

Quizzed on the possibility of a fight that brings together two of the Caribbean’s best prize fighters in such a short negotiation period, Atwell replied:

“I’m 95% confident that the fight would come off.

They see me as a potential opponent to boost his record because of the fact that I am a world class fighter and a win over me would be career changing for him”.

Atwell who was rated NO.12 by the WBC in May added that “I’m confident that his management will make it (the fight) happen.”

During a post-fight interview at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday, Mullings told Stabroek Sports…”Plans are in the pipelines for me to fight Atwell. We will have a talk with the board before we leave on Monday to iron out the wrinkles of the fight, but it’s a high possibly that it will happen.”
