Demerara making strong reply to Essequibo’s 263

Demerara were making a strong reply to Essequibo’s 263 all out in their final round match of the Guyana Cricket Board’s senior Inter County competition.

Playing at the Georgetown Cricket Club’s Bourda ground, Demerara were 60-2 after 19.1 overs at the end of the first day’s play of the four day encounter.

Opting to take first strike at the former ‘test’ venue, the Cinderella County side reached its total on the back of an attacking half century by Ricardo Adams, his third fifty for the tournament.

Adams blasted 10 effortless boundaries during his top score of 54 which came in 61 deliveries before he was run out by Rajendra Chandrika.

He received support from Royan Fredericks (40), Brian Herbert (40) and Tulsiram Premnauth, who played a cameo innings of 44 from 29 balls, including five fours and three sixes.

However, Essequibo, who has been getting off to good starts with the bat but failing to capitalize, was undone by the spin of former West Indies U-19 player Amir Khan and the medium pace of Christopher Barnwell. The two bowlers combined to capture seven Essequibo wickets on a docile Bourda track. Khan finished with 4-54 from 14 overs while Barnwell took 3-28 from 11.

Responding to Essequibo’s total, Demerara reached 54 before losing their first wicket that of Trevon Griffith for 32 as the batsman played a scoop shot into the gloves of wicketkeeper Kevon Boodie off the bowling of Fredericks.

Shemroy Barrington (20) was the other batsman that was dismissed after being bowled off the final ball of the day by Hemchand Persaud.

Night watchman Khan will resumed his innings tomorrow on three as Demerara continues its quest towards the GCB 2014 four-day title.
