Defending champs GYO off to winning start

Defending champions Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) got off to a winning start after defeating Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) by 30 runs in their opening match of the Banks DIH Limited Malta Supreme/ Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) Under-13 Tournament, yesterday at the Guyana National Industry and Commerce (GNIC) ground.

GYO won the toss batted first and scored 285-5 from 25 overs while GCC lost seven wickets for 255 from their allotment of 25 overs.

Keshawn Thomas innings of 35 for GYO differentiated the two teams’ score as he was the only batsman to score over 20 in the match. Thomas was supported by Brandon Mathews and Elnathan Suknandan, who scored 14 and 10 runs respectively.

Four wickets fell via the run out route for GYO while Ricardo Phillips of the GCC captured the other wicket to fall.

Replying to GYO’s total, GCC fell short by 30 runs as off spinner Meshack Softleigh captured three wickets from three economical overs. Zackery Jodah was GCC’s top scorer.

Over at Malteenoes Sports Club, the visitors Diplomat won the game by a narrow margin of three runs. Diplomat’s all-rounder Nicholas had a good game with bat and ball as he scored 10 runs before claiming three wickets.

However, it was Jonathan St. Hill’s (24) batting that propelled Diplomats to 233 off 25 overs. Treyjohn Prince scored 11 while MSC’s Shaquille Charles and Wayne Bollers Jr. captured four wickets each.

In response, MSC batted carefully in pursuit of their target but fell short in the end by three runs after losing seven wickets.

The competition continues today at the MSC ground and the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA) ground. At MSC, GYO will tackle the host from 9:30 a.m while from 1:30p.m Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) will face Diplomats. Meanwhile at YMCA, Transport Sports Club will come up against GCC from 9:30a.m while Everest Cricket Club and Bel Air Rubis will do battle from 1:30 p.m.
