Despite finishing off the podium, Guyana’s five-man team that competed at the Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships over the weekend in Puerto Rico turned in creditable performances.
In the Elite Men’s Road Race on the second day of the Championships on Sunday, Raynauth Jeffrey (17th) and Hamzah Eastman (19th) showed determination and grit on the hilly 138km trek and both finished in the top 20.
On Saturday, Jeffrey, the National time-trial champion and Marlon Williams endured grueling conditions in the 44km Individual Time Trial for the Elite Men, placing fifth and eighth respectively.
National road race champion, Geron Williams along with Marlon Williams, Alanzo Greaves and 54 other starters did not finish the event.
Winning the road race was Cedric Eustache of Martinique. Trinidad and Tobago’s Emile Abraham was second while Puerto Rico’s Edgardo Richiez copped bronze.
Puerto Rican Efren Ortega Rivera won Saturday’s time trial. He came second last year. Second was William de Jesus Guzman of the Dominican Republic and third was Brendan Martinez also from Puerto Rico. The Caribbean Elite Cycling Championships was a qualifier for the Pan Am Games scheduled for July 10-26, 2015 in Toronto, Canada.
