Kings dethrone defending champs Monedderlust

The No. #5 ground in West Coast Berbice was transformed into the Victoria Community Centre as Victoria King’s dethroned champs Monedderlust FC 2-0 to be crowned the Starlite Generation/Monedderlust FC 2nd annual Berbice Cup champions on Saturday.

Winston Pompey and Sherwin Skeete separated the two sides with goals on either side of half time in the fourth and 90th+3 minutes respectively.

With the win, the East Coast of Demerara unit claimed the $400,000 first place prize, the championship trophy and respective medals.

The dethroned champs for their efforts walked away with $300,000 and the corresponding accolade. In the individual award section, Pompey claimed the highest goal scorer accolade with six strikes while teammate Sherlock Dowden was adjudged to be the most valuable player.

The individual accolades would continue to go in the favour of the newly crowned champs as Ron Collins was given the best custodian award. Travis Henry of Monedderlust claimed the best defender trophy.

In a physical affair devoid of clear cut chances, Pompey would push his side into the lead as he netted from the penalty spot following an infraction just inside the centre of the area.

Tasked with taking the resulting spot-kick, the veteran sharp shooter would clinically place his effort into the lower left hand corner of the net to silence the majority home support.

With the score unchanged going into the second half, Skeete would then seal his side’s victory in the final moments, lashing his effort into the right hand corner with the outside of his right footed, following a one-on-one situation with the custodian within the left side of the area.

In the third place playoff, fellow East Coast of Demerara unit Ann’s Grove crushed Berbice side Cougars by a 4-0 margin.

Maxton Adams opened the scoring for Ann’s Grove in the 20th minute with a finish down the centre of the goal to the lower left hand corner, after racing into the area upon latching onto a forward pass.

Kevon Barry would increase their lead in the 58th minute, stabbing his effort into the empty net from within the centre of the six yard area, after an initial right sided strike went straight through the legs of the Berbice custodian.

It would then become 3-0 two minutes later as Antonio Jackson found the back of the net through a looping header box into the left hand corner, from within the centre of the penalty area.

The result would then be sealed in the 67th minute as Quincy Johnson netted with a simple finish to the empty net, after the Cougars shot-stopper fumbled a right sided cross inside the centre of the box.

For their victory, Ann’s Grove walked away with the third place package of $200,000 and trophy while Cougars for their showing, collected $100,000.
