Gayle stars with half-century, Russell fails to fire

POTCHEFSTROOM, South Africa, CMC – Chris Gayle blasted another half-century while Andre Russell suffered the indignity of a first ball ‘duck’, as Lions beat Knights in a thrilling Super Over in the South African Ram Slam T20 League here Sunday.

Sent in at Senwes Park, Lions rattled up 161 for seven off their 20 overs, with the left-handed Gayle scoring exactly 50 off 40 deliveries with eight fours and a six, to follow up his century earlier in the week.

He put on 80 for the first wicket with Alviro Petersen (34) before falling via the run out route in the tenth over.

Neil McKenzie chipped in with 34 while Russell earned two for 44 with his medium pace.

In Knights’ turn at the crease, Obus Pienaar top-scored with 43 not out while Pite van Biljon got 33 but Russell fell without scoring, lbw to leg-spinner Eddie Leie off the first ball he faced.Requiring 16 runs off the last over, Knights scrambled 15 thanks to two boundaries from Pienaar, to tie the game.

In the Super Over, Knights managed seven runs with Russell clobbering a boundary but the Jamaican returned to bowl a fantastic over to also limit Lions to seven runs.

Lions was awarded victory courtesy of a superior boundary count.

At Kingsmead in Durban, Dwayne Bravo’s Dolphins produced a strong batting performance to beat Darren Sammy’s Titans by 64 runs.

Opting to bat first, Dolphins piled up 194 for five with opener Cameron Delport top-scoring with 45. Bravo, however, managed just 13 from 11 balls.

Sammy took two for 29 with his medium pace.

In reply, Titans were restricted to 130 for nine, with Sammy lasting just two balls at the crease and scoring just one.

Bravo went wicket-less from his four overs which cost 26 runs.
