Trini daredevils ready to tear up the track

The Trinidadian daredevils have invaded Guyana’s shores on a quest to leave the competition in their rear view mirrors when they put pedal to the metal on Sunday in the final leg of the Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC).

A 14-man unit of checkered flag-chasing speedsters touched down in Guyana to preserve their lead by doing what they do best: push their built-for-speed machines to the limit. Ten drivers and four riders are fully geared up and ready to set the South Dakota Circuit ablaze.

“We are here to win” Team Manager Jerry Abdool told Stabroek Sport yesterday.

“As far as the cars go, there is very good potential, we have a mixed bag of young and experienced drivers and they are all hungry for success.”

During yesterday’s trial run at the circuit, Abdool disclosed that Gerard Carrington (Mitsubishi Evo 8), Paul Vieira (Mazda RX7) and Kristian Boodoosingh (Mitsubishi Evo 8) will be piloting their machines with the best of the best in the feature Group 4 category.

Saleem Deen, Haresh Nanan, Marc Gill, Mootie Maharaj and brothers Rodrick and Rainier Amar will compete in the CMRC Group 2 and 3 categories while Frankie Boodram will steer his Honda Civic in the local Group 2 races. Assistant manager and B Class biker, Nicholas Kennedy spoke on behalf of the two-wheeled speed demons, intimating that they plan do nothing else but go full throttle.

“We will perform to our best, we got in some laps yesterday and the track was fast, so we are ready and good to go.”

Dominic De Leon, Ravi Bunsee and Warren DeNobrega are the other wheelmen suiting up with Trinidadian colours.

The Trinis lead the country championships with 308 points. The hosts are on 297 followed closely by Barbados one point behind. Team Jamaica is in the cellar on 151 points.

This year’s final leg line-up is nothing short of impressive, attracting drivers like Jamaica’s David Summerbell and Peter Rae, Barbados’ Stuart and Mark Maloney and Guyana’s ‘Big Four’ Kevin and Kristian Jeffrey, Andrew King and Mark Vieira.

Organisers are promising that Sunday’s event will have all the colour and pomp Guyanese have come to expect over the years with plenty of entertainment for the whole family. (Emmerson Campbell)
