De Nobrega in record swim, Grant wins twice

The Guyana Amateur Swimming Association Schools National Swimming Championships started yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre at Liliendaal with a record breaking swim by Joseph De Nobrega and two wins for swimming sensation Amy Grant.

De Nobrega produced his record swim in the boys 13 – 14 400metre freestyle event clocking 4.44.22s to break club mate Hannibal Gaskin’s record.

Grant won the 100 metre freestyle and the 50 metre backstroke events

while Dylan Nurse scored a spectacular double in the boys 13-14 age group winning the 50m breaststroke and the 100m freestyle events.

His sister Riley Nurse won the 100m freestyle in the girls 9- 10 age group.

Onika George narrowly defeated Soroya Simmons in the 50m girls 15-17 age group backstroke but Simmons returned half an hour later to exact revenge on George in the girls 100m freestyle event.

Antonio Hussein won the 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle in the boys 11-12 years category while in the boys 9-10 age group Leon Seaton swam away from the field to take the 50m backstroke title.

In the girls 11-12 years category, Kenita Mahaica won the breaststroke 50m event in fine style.
