Elaine scores goal of the tournament as Enterprise routs St Pius

Enterprise Primary and F.E. Pollard Primary highlighted their status as early tournament favourites, defeating St. Pius and Smith Memorial respectively when the inaugural Petra Organization Girls Pee Wee football event commenced yesterday

Hosted at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue, Enterprise defeated St. Pius 4-0 in the final matchup of the day while F.E. Pollard downed Smith Memorial 3-0.

In the final fixture of the day between Enterprise and St. Pius, midfielder Aaliyah Elaine registered the goal of the event to date in the 12th minute to give the eventual winners the lead.

Awarded a left sided freekick following an infringement by the St. Pius rear-guard, Elaine would rifle her right footed effort into the back of the net to spark wild celebrations from her teammates and supporters. She would then double their side’s lead in the 16th minute, placing her right footed strike into the right hand corner from the left side of the box, after latching onto a loose ball.

An own goal in the 18th minute would then make it 3-0 for Enterprise as the final defender inadvertently headed the ball into her own net. The result would then be completed in the 22nd minute as Alliana George netted through a left sided shot into the lower right hand corner.

In the F.E Pollard and Smith Memorial matchup, Jellena Rollins broke the deadlock in the third minute with a first time shot down the centre of the net after a goal kick attempt landed in her path.

Omefia Langeller would then make it 2-0 four minutes later for F.E. Pollard with a left sided finish into the lower right hand corner. Langeller would then net her double in the 10th minute to complete the win with an effort from the centre of box into the left corner. In the opening matchup of the tourney, St. Stephen’s edged West Ruimveldt 1-0. Naomi Curry scored the first goal in the history of the event with a flat strike down the middle of the goal in the 23rd minute, after receiving the ball on the left side of the penalty box.

In the second game, North Georgetown defeated East La Penitence by a 2-0 score line. Shedanie Bristol opened the scoring for the winners in the fifth minute with a shot to the back of the net from the centre of the box, following a one-on-one situation with the keeper.

Angel Denny would then seal the win three minutes later with a shot into lower right hand corner from the left sided of the field, following goal mouth scramble. The third fixture of the day saw Tucville Primary and Stella Maris Primary battling to a 1-1 draw. Jenicka Hackett opened the scoring for Tucville Primary compliments of penalty kick conversion to the lower left corner following a handball within the penalty area.

However, the Woolford Avenue side would earn a valuable point in the eighth minute as Akio Glasgow netted from a goal mouth tussle with a shot to the centre of the net from the left side of the box.

The fifth matchup of the day saw South Ruimveldt defeating St. Margaret’s 2-0. Yolanda Hoppy gave South Ruimveldt the early lead in the 4th minute with a powerful right sided strike into the lower left hand corner. The win would then be sealed in the 17th minute of the second period through an own goal.

Prior to the commencement of the event, a march past featuring all 12 participating schools was conducted while the ceremonial opening kick was done by Health 2000 Guyana Incorporated Managing Director Maliaka Persaud.

The sponsors of the event are Health 2000 Guyana Incorporated, Ansa McAl through their Smalta Brand, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. The action is slated to continue at the same venue on Saturday 22nd.
