Stella Maris upset defending champs in Petra/Courts Pee Wee final

History was denied yesterday when a Darron Niles inspired Stella Maris, overcame defending champs St. Pius 2-0 on penalty kicks in the grand finale of the third annual Petra Organization/Courts Pee Wee u-11 football tourney yesterday.

With both sides unable to find a winner at the Thirst Park venue during the normal and extra time intervals, Niles would give his side the 1-0 lead in the shoot-out as he buried their first attempt from the mark.

St. Pius would then fall behind as Brandon Solomon missed their first attempt from the penalty mark. The Woolford Avenue side would then make it 2-0 as Earl Grant netted their second attempt to the left side of the goal.

Needing to score to force the matchup into the third round of penalty kicks, Raymond Austin however would be denied by custodian Gavin Mark to send the Stella Maris contingent into celebrations, clinching their first title in the process.

With the win, Stella Maris denied St. Pius the opportunity to become the first school to ever win the event twice and in consecutive years.

For their efforts, they received the championship trophy, a desktop computer, team medals and uniforms while St. Pius for their showing, walked away with the runners-up trophy, medals and a desktop computer. In the third place showdown, Tucville Primary defeated South Ruimveldt by a 2-0 score line. Keion Marques sealed the win with a double in the eighth and 17 minutes.

Due to the win, Tucville walked away with the third place trophy and a flat screen television. South Ruimveldt for their efforts collected the fourth place trophy and a flat screen television.

In the presentation ceremony that followed the conclusion of the event, D. Niles was adjudged to be the event’s most valuable player. He received a trophy and will collect a pair of cleats.

Tucville’s K. Marques collected the highest goal scorer award with 10 goals. He received a trophy and will also collect a pair of cleats. Stella Maris’s G. Mark collected the best goalkeeper award and will also collect a pair of football cleats.

Wheatland Fordyce, who guided South Ruimveldt to the semi-final stage and Green Acres to the round of 16 stage, received the best coach award while F.E. Pollard walked away with the most disciplined team award.

Schools finishing in the 5-16 plate section also received their respective placement trophies at the closing ceremony. In other results, F.E. finished in the fifth position after dismantling West Ruimveldt 4-0 compliments of a Tramel McCurdy double in the sixth and 25th minutes.

Sealing the win were Makhaya Jervis and Quincy Williams in the 24th and 27th minutes respectively.

St. Margaret’s claimed the seventh position, defeating St. Angela’s 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 0-0.

In the 9-16 section, East La Penitence earned the ninth spot, defeating Green Acres by a 2-0 margin. Sigmund Cobena led the winners with a double on either side of halt time in the 8th and 17th minutes.

In the tussle for the 11-12 placement, North Georgetown defeated St. Stephen’s 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 0-0.

Enterprise Primary defeated Smith Memorial 3-2 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 1-1 to lay claim to the 13th spot. Martin King scored for the winners in normal time with a 24th minute strike while Jamar Haynes scored for the eventual losers in the third minute.

In the battle of the 15-16 positions, Ketley Primary clinched the 15th spot by defeating Marian Academy 2-0 compliments of a Yohance Florimonte double in the 19th and 27th minutes respectively.
