Sparta proves to be Street Fighters’ boss

High profile sides Sparta Boss, Alexander Village, North Ruimveldt, Island All-Stars, Albouystown-A and Back Circle were amongst the wins when the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown leg commenced on Tuesday at the Demerara Park tarmac.

In the feature contest of the night, Sparta Boss defeated a youthful Festival City Street Fighters by a 1-0 score line in their group-G showdown.

Devon Millington proved to be the decisive factor between the two sides as he netted in the second minute with asimple finish to the right corner following a one-on-one with the final defender.

The second fixture of the evening witnessed North Ruimveldt overcoming arch-rivals Tucville by a 2-1 margin in their group-B affair.

Gerald Gittens opened the scoring for the winners with only seven seconds on the clock through a first time shot into the centre of the net, after receiving a left sided pass just outside the right post.

Tucville would quickly get back into the matchup as Dennis Edwards netted in the fifth minute, placing his right footed shot into the right corner from the right side of the field.

However, Colin Daniel would find the go-ahead winner for North Ruimveldt in the 22nd minute through a first time strike into the left corner, after receiving a Joshua Brown left sided pass following a pass combination initiated by Travis Grant from the centre of the field.

In the fourth matchup, Alexander Village squeaked past Charlestown 3-2 on sudden death kicks after normal time finished 1-1 in their group-F showdown.

Andre Trotz gave Charlestown the advantage in the sixth minute with a cheeky turn and finish past the onrushing final defender from just outside the centre of the penalty area.

Nevertheless, their lead would be short-lived as Wendell Pedro equalised one minute later, finishing into the empty net from within the right side of the area while falling, after skipping past the final defender. The first round of penalty kicks would finish 1-1 Delon Williams netted for Alexander Village and A. Trotz scored for Charlestown from the mark. It would remain 1-1 as both sides missed their second and eventual third attempts from the halfway distance.

The scores would then be locked once more as both sides scored their fourth attempts. With sudden death kicks now required to decide the outcome, Alexander Village would prevail as D. Williams netted from the mark while A. Trotz failed to hit the target.

In group-C, Island All-Stars downed East Front Road by a 2-1 score. Paul Port gave the All-Stars the early lead in the third minute with a finish down the centre of the goal, after stealing the ball from the final defender in front of the goal.

East Front Road would then level proceedings in the 13th minute compliments of a Kacy John effort, stabbing home his left sided shot down the middle of the goal, following a right sided pass.

The All-Stars however would not be denied as Kevon Hyman found the back of the net in the 23rd minute, slotting his right footed attempt down the centre of the net after receiving the ball in front the centre of the penalty arc.

In group-D, Albouystown-A defeated Laing Avenue 1-0. Devon Dooker found the back of the net in the 19th minute, striking his effort down the middle of the woodwork from the left side of the box, following a two-on-one situation with the final defender.

In the penultimate fixture, Back Circle overcame fellow East Ruimveldt based unit California Square in their physical group-E derby matchup 2-1 on penalty kicks after normal time finished 0-0.

In other results, Bent Street got their campaign off to the perfect start, defeating Castello Housing Scheme 1-0 in the second group-G fixture. Daniel Wilson was on target in the win in the second minute compliments of a right sided attempt.

The opening match of the night saw North East La Penitence needling South Ruimveldt 2-1 on penalty kicks after their group-B affair finished nil-all at the end of regulation time.

Prior to the start of the event, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports Alfred Kind, opened the tourney with the ceremonial kick-off. The action is slated to continue today at the Albouystown tarmac with slated matchups.

At 19:00hrs, Globe Yard will tackle Adelade Street Charlestown while North Sophia will faceoff with Festival City Warriors.

Former winners Leopold Street will match skills with last year’s runners-up Stevedore Housing Scheme-A at 20:00hrs while former champs Hope Street-Tigerbay will battle Durban Street at 20:30hrs.

Following the conclusion of a 30 minutes break, current title holders Queen Street Tigerbay will lock horns with West Back Road at 21:00hrs whilst West Front Road-Gold is Money opposes Cross Street from 21:30hrs.

The final two matchups of the night will witness Broad Street Bullies engaging Riverview at 10:00hrs and home side Albouystown-B matching skills with South Sophia from 22:30hrs.
