Pride trail Jaguars by 228 runs as rain washes out second day

Rain washed out play in day two of the WICB Professional Cricket League (PCL) Regional 4-day match held at the Guyana National Stadium between the Guyana Jaguars and Barbados Pride with the visiting team still trailing by 228 runs heading into day three today.

At stumps, Barbados were 33-2 from 15.1 in their pursuit of the Jaguars’ first innings total of 261. Batsmen Shai Hope (*8) and Johnathan Carter (*0) were at the crease and will resume their innings today if play is possible. Ronsford Beaton (1-22) and Veerasammy Permaul (1-3) were the wicket takers.

After resuming on 4-0 and trailing by 257, Barbados lost openers Kyle Corbin (6) and Captain Carlos Brathwaite (18) who both restarted their respective innings on 2. Corbin, who replaced original skipper and opening batsman Kraigg

Braithwaite, pulled the first delivery from Beaton for four. He then provided a catch to Trevon Griffith in the gully area giving the fast bowler a bit of revenge, minutes before rain halted play after a mere five overs were completed in the morning session.

Meanwhile, the skipper, who promoted himself up the order, struck three fours in his short innings. It wasn’t long before Permaul had him caught in the covers by Raymon Reifer leaving the score at 33-2 as showers returned minutes before the lunch interval. Approximately three hours later, officials decided that continued play on day two was impossible.

The Jaguars’ first innings saw wicket-keeper/batsman Anthony Bramble scoring a defiant 73, while West Indies Under-19 player Shimron Hetmyer chipped in with a mature 47 to help propel the local side to their first innings total of 261 all out. Former West Indies player Ryan Hinds was the tormentor with the ball for Barbados capturing 4-50 to put the Guyana XI under pressure.

Both sides will now hope for a full day’s play today despite weather forecasts predicting more showers for the next few days. The Guyana Jaguars who are currently at the top of the table with 37 points having disposed of the Leewards and Windwards in round one and two will hope to make it three in a row against the Bajans. The match is scheduled to start at 09:00hrs.
