Suriname boxing association head to visit

President of Suriname’s Boxing Association, Remie Burke will be visiting next Wednesday to hold discussions with Guyana’s amateur board on regional integration.

This comes on the heels of president of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) Steve Ninvalle being elected to amateur boxing’s governing body International Boxing Association (AIBA) Executive Committee.

Ninvalle told Stabroek Sport on Monday that Burke’s visit augurs well for “fostering relations between the CARICOM member states.”

“We see it as fostering better relations between the member states of CARICOM”, the GBA head noted.

Ninvalle who was voted to be an Executive Committee member at AIBA’s 2014 Congress last month in South Korea added that “it says that after the Congress we are at least exploring avenues whereby we can assist each other be it technically or in other areas”.

According to Ninvalle, on Burke’s sojourn, he will also have dialogue with national coach, Wincel Thomas along with Technical Director of the association, Terrence Poole.

Ninvalle then expounded on how the Caribbean and CARICOM presidents were able to have a voice on AIBA’s Executive Committee

“We know that the catalyst for the Caribbean being elected to a seat in the executive chambers of AIBA was the Goodwill Tournament that we had in February.

That is where we had actually called for a renaissance in the sport in the Caribbean and we also called for a meeting of the presidents.

“We actually had that meeting and myself, `Shakes ‘(St Lucia’s President David Christopher), representatives from Jamaica and Trinidad and we started galvanizing from there so who knows what benefits can be derived from Burke’s visit”, he said. (Emmerson Campbell)
