Red Force staring at defeat as Guyana batting swaggers

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Trinidad and Tobago Red Force were left facing their second defeat of the new WICB Professional Cricket League after leaders Guyana Jaguar produced a bold batting performance to put them under pressure, on the penultimate day of their fourth round clash here yesterday.

Trailing by 294 runs on first innings, the hosts crashed to 58 for four at the close at Queen’s Park Oval and require another 236 runs to make Guyana bat again.

At the close, Yannic Cariah was propping up the innings with an unbeaten 21 and was partnered by nightwatchman Daniel St Clair on eight.

Fast bowler Ronsford Beaton put the Jaguars firmly in the driver’s seat, picking up two for 16 to initiate the rot in the T&T innings.

In the third over of the innings, he sent back West Indies opener Lendl Simmons bowled for ten and off the very next ball, had Yannick Ottley caught by Raymon Reifer.

T&T were then reeling in the next over at 14 for three when opener Evin Lewis slammed a return catch back to seamer Reifer who held onto a fantastic return catch.

Cariah then dug in for just over an hour, adding 36 for the fourth wicket with Jason Mohammed who got 16 before driving left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul to captain Vishaul Singh at cover, just before the close.

Earlier, Guyana piled up 492 for eight declared, after resuming the day on 300 for five.

Singh pushed his unbeaten 115 to 141 while Chris Barnwell, with 65 not out and Permaul, with exactly 50 not out, hit half centuries.

Singh faced 229 deliveries in just under five hours at the crease and counted 18 fours.

Off-spinner Jason Mohammed finished with three for 41 while left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein picked up two for 106.
