Under-17 Secondary School Football Tournament launched

Premiership Sports Promotions in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, officially launched their inaugural u-17 Secondary School Invitational Tournament yesterday at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Headquarters.

The event which is slated to commence tomorrow at the Ministry of Education, will feature 16 Georgetown-based institutions competing in a knockout format.

Secondary schools participating in the event are St. George’s High, Dolphin, Charlestown, St. Stanislaus College, East Ruimveldt, Tutorial High, Lodge, North Georgetown, The Bishops’ High, Queen’s College, Tucville, North Ruimveldt Multilateral, St. Mary’s, Christ Church, Queenstown Secondary and St. John’s College.

Winners of the event will receive prizes equivalent to the value of $200,000 and the championship trophy while the second, third and fourth place finishers will collect prizes and the corresponding trophy equivalent to the value of $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.

Ministry of Education representative Seon Erskine during a brief address said “Thanks to the Premiership group for reaching out to the ministry and making us a part of the tournament.

We are looking forward to have collaborations with more stakeholders in football inclusive of the Guyana Football Federation”.

Erskine further said “Being a part of the tournament is important for us and we ask the schools to give your best and adhere to the rules. We ask the teachers to ensure the all the students are best behaved and for the trainers to make sure they are properly prepared”.

GFF General Secretary Mabiola Howard (Ag) said “The GFF is about developing football at all levels and our current focus is on youth and grassroots levels. Our intention is to develop youth football and this is one of the mechanisms”.

“I thank the group for the initiative and I wish the tournament much success and let the best team win” she added. The opening doubleheader of the event will witness St. George’s and Dolphin Secondary facing off at 13:00hrs while Charlestown Secondary will oppose St. Stanislaus College from 15:00hrs.
