The charge against Griffith states that on October 4th, he murdered Britton at her residence.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Raquel Mars told the court that the accused admitted to committing the crime.

As the charge was read, Griffith stood in the prisoner’s dock and showed no emotion. He was not required to enter a plea and he was remanded to prison until November 5th, when the case will be heard again.

Britton, 78, of Hopetown West Coast Berbice was found in her home after a neighbour ventured over to find out why her granddaughter was crying. Griffith had slept in the woman’s house on the night she was murdered but foul play was not initially suspected, given the woman’s age.

However, her son, Rudolph Britton, subsequently travelled to Berbice and noticed marks of violence on the body, which triggered a police investigation. A post-mortem examination confirmed that the woman was raped and strangled.
