Local and overseas golfers swinging into action at Digicel’s tournament

Local Telecommunications provider Digicel and the Lusignan Golf Club (LGC) yesterday officially launched their 2015 Digicel Guyana Open Golf 2-day competition which will tee off tomorrow at the Lusignan Golf Course.

The ceremony was held at Digicel’s Barrack Street Head Office in the presence of media operatives along with LGC President Oncar Ramroop, Club Captain Chatterpaul Deo, Club Public Relations Officer, Guy Griffith, Digicel Senior Sponsorship Executive Louanna Abrams, and Communications Manager Vidya Sanichara along with overseas and local golfers.

Abrams expressed Digicel’s satisfaction with the company’s involvement and commitment to LGC’s initiative of the development and growth of golf in the country, while for his part Ramroop thanked Digicel for its continued support and sponsorship of the sport. Both indicated delight at level of participation from the golfers who came from Trinidad and Tobago, Canada, the United States of America, Suriname and French Guiana.

Former Digicel champion and overseas based golfer, Roger Rajkumar, Canadian Bob Gendron and US-based Guyanese Mohamed Shafi all expressed their gratitude to the telecommunication company for embracing the Guyana Open Golf tournament and signalled warnings to the local players that the overseas contingent intended to give a good account of themselves. Current champions, Avinash Persaud and Joann Deo will look to retain their respective titles

Deo said the tournament will be played in the Medal Play format with the golfers competing in five categories – the usual: First Flight (0-9 handicap), Second Flight (10-18), Third Flight (19-28), Ladies Flight (0-36), and for the first time the Senior Flight, which caters for golfers ages 60 and over.

Similar to previous years, the overall champion in the Men’s division will be awarded to the golfer with the Best Gross, while on the distaff side, the winner will be adjudged to the player with the Best Net. Tee off time is 05:30h tomorrow while Sunday’s final day on the fairways should provide a mouthwatering finish. (Clifton Ross)
