A porter who confessed to having 4.5 grammes of cocaine for purpose of trafficking was fined $30,000 and jailed for three years when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
Ramesh Persaud, 48, had the cocaine in his possession on Boxing Day at Stabroek, the court was told. Persaud, pleaded guilty to the offence.
According to the police, on December 26, at 09:25 hrs, the police were on patrol when they observed Persaud acting suspiciously.
When the officers approached him and carried out a search, they found in his pants pocket a plastic bag containing a white substance. Persaud was subsequently arrested and taken to the Brickdam Police Station, where the substance was confirmed to be cocaine and weighed.
Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently sentenced Persaud.
