Spike your lawn now!

During the week, I inspected some lawns around the outskirts of the city and for crying out loud, most of them are in need of help!

With the heavy rainfall we are experiencing lawns and plants are showing signs of distress.

Immediate attention must be given to both for their survival.

Garden (Peggy Chin) It is important, if you want to maintain your lawn, to make sure that you have good drainage.

Make sure you keep the drains clear so that the excess water can run off easily. Now is the time to start spiking your lawn with a gardening fork.

The spike should penetrate the soil to a depth of approximately 3 to 4 inches. This would allow air and water to access the roots. Push the fork into the soil at intervals, and then move it back and forth to loosen the soil.

Check your potted plants and clear any drainage holes that are blocked up. If you have excess water in your yard, try raising your potted plants off the ground. This will bring immediate relief to your soggy plants.

You would need to apply Plant Food to both your lawn and potted plants as the nutrients would have been leached out by the rain.

Remember that heavy rainfall and flooding brings diseases; both fungi and pests.

It is essential that these diseases are identified early and controlled to prevent your plant collection from being devastated. There are no shortcuts to properly maintaining your garden!

Until next week, Happy Gardening.
