Zinnias

We are well into the season of colourful annuals, seeds and bulbs.

Zinnia elegans commonly called Mexican Zinnias originated, as the name suggests, in Mexico and spread throughout the Caribbean and the Americas.

Zinnias were named after a German Botanist Johann Gottfried Zinn in the17th century. Zinnias are related to the Sunflower genus.

Flowers can be single, semi-single or double in shades of red, white, pink, yellow and orange.

There are also the mildew-resistant varieties and which are mostly bi-coloured, such as the famous Chippendale, Rose pinwheel and Zinnia linearis.

Zinnia elegans are gaily coloured garden favourites which include Peter Pan, Lilliput and Thumbelina. These are daisy like blooms which are low growing and are ideal for window boxes.

Plant Zinnia seeds in Pro Mix using the same method as with Marigolds. Transplant Zinnia seedlings into well-drained potting soil when they are approximately 2 to 3 inches tall. Take extra care when transplanting. Fertilize with Miracle Gro All Purpose Plant Food every 7 – 14 days. Water daily and do not allow to dry out. These half-hardy annuals like full sun and makes attractive borders, edgings or mass planting beds for cut flowers. They can last up to 3 to 6 months with care.

Butterflies and Hummingbirds are attracted to them. So why not plant a few and add bright colours to your garden.

Until next week happy gardening.
