Welcome to the first edition of Lifestyle.

As our name suggests, this magazine looks at the Guyanese lifestyle. People making a living, Guyanese culture and traditions, food and fashion will be the focus.

In this our first issue, we take you to Sheet Anchor, a fishing village in Berbice where our writer Jannelle Williams found that development has mlitated against the simple lives of these fisher folk. Their livelihoods depend on them venturing out into the Berbice River and returning with fish. This has not been happening and the fishermen have pointed to various developments which they believe might be causing this, as they persevere.

By contrast, in the village of Buxton, our writer Thandeka Percival found a kite maker whose business is thriving. With the influx of imported kites, the general assumption was that locally made kites were no longer soaring as they had done in the past. Far from it; as kite maker Marvin Cole points out, business is brisk and he is even exporting his product.

Food writer Cynthia Nelson presents a veritable Easter feast, while looking back nostalgically at the fasting and feasting of the Lenten and Easter seasons in her childhood. She also includes two of her original recipes with detailed instructions for achieving culinary perfection.

In a glance at fashion, Stacy Hope and Ashma John have dissected office wear and found it wanting. They have come together and presented fresh new ideas on upbeat office style that fits right in with Guyanese conservatism without being drab.

This is Stabroek News’s first full-colour magazine, which we would like to publish on a quarterly basis and fit with seasons and events. On offer will be the excellent quality reading material with which our newspaper is associated. The difference is that this makes for leisure reading and it’s free. So come with us as we explore the Guyanese lifestyle.
