Deoram Sookchand was today charged with murdering his wife, Pamela Kendall, whom he had claimed was killed by an intruder at their Number 45 Village, Corentyne home last week.

It is alleged that on August 20th, at Number 45 Village Corentyne, Berbice, Sookchand, 59, called “Cakes,” murdered Kendall, called “Pam.”

Sookchand was not required to plead to the charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan. He was remanded to prison until September 14th, when the matter will be called at the Whim Magistrate’s Court.

His initial claim that Kendall was shot during a home invasion had prompted a protest last week by fellow villagers, who were incensed over continuing attacks across Berbice.

They had burned tires and blocked a section of the road with solid objects, including tree trunks and abandoned utility poles, to vent their frustration over the apparent rise in crime across Berbice.

Sookchand was subsequently held by police after investigators found holes in his account.
