Driver who struck down three friends on East Bank still at large

After three weeks, the driver who ran away after he allegedly struck down three youths, resulting in the death of one and injuries to the others, is still at large.

A police source told Stabroek News yesterday that the driver, believed to be Asif Khan of the West Bank Demerara is still on the run.

The source further told this publication that the police have been “continuously checking…” with the man’s relatives. On Sunday December 21, 18-year-old Parmanand Deokaran also known as, “Jonny” or “Rago” of Success, East Coast Demerara, died on his way to the hospital after he was struck down along with his two friends, Davendra Mangal, 20, of 27 Better Hope and Kayshawn Ramnarine, 17, of 184 Good Hope Phase 2. They were standing in the vicinity of the Princess Hotel when the incident occurred.

Mangal and Ramnarine were discharged some days later with vague memories of what happened.

According to the eyewitness and friend of the trio, 15-year-old Nicholas Verasammy, they had left the hotel to go home. His friends stood on the road trying to get a taxi and he was some distance away when he saw motor car PRR 555 approaching; it was swaying.

His friends were knocked into a nearby trench and the driver fled the scene on foot.
