Five awarded in Gillian Thompson reading challenge

The National Library last week awarded five persons who participated in the Gillian Thompson Reading Challenge, during a simple ceremony at the Library’s Conference Room.

According to a release from the library, Dianne Henry, Keon Heywood, Lisa-Mae Agard, Courtlee Rodrigues and Carol Halley participated in the adult 19-years and older category and were subsequently awarded.

The participants were required to read The Colour Purple by Alice Walker and Coloured Girl In The Ring by Guyanese author Brenda Chester-DoHarris. They also answered four essay type questions, two oral questions and wrote an analysis on the books.

Henry copped 1st place, Heywood 2nd, Agard 3rd, Rodrigues 4th, and Halley 5th.

Each participant received trophies, books and monetary awards presented by the Thompson Family and Banks DIH.

In addition to prizes awarded, the winners will be offered an opportunity to appear on television to deliver their analysis, as well as to share their experience in the competition and to encourage others to take up the challenge.
