Husband fined for cursing wife over rum

A man was fined $10,000 after he confessed to cursing his wife because he thought she stole his rum.

Vibert Deebrah appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, where he was charged with both cursing his wife and hitting her.

Prosecutor John Singh described Deebrah as an alcoholic and said his hobby for the past four years has been beating his wife, Chandra Deebrah.

The prosecutor said on January 7, 2015, a drunken Vibert went home and asked Chandra for his rum, while using an expletive.

His wife told him she did not know where it was. As a result, the prosecutor added, the man fired three slaps at the woman, causing her to fall and hit her head on a bannister. A report was made at the police station, leading to the man’s arrest.

With tears flowing from his eyes, Vibert Deebrah said he did not hit his wife but he admitted to cursing her.

Magistrate Zamilla Ally told the husband he had a serious problem if he could curse his wife for a bottle of rum. He was fined $10,000 for cursing his wife and after no objection to bail by the prosecutor, he was granted $10,000 bail on the assault charge. He is due to return to court on January 20.
